This kayak has passed many a test-when on a return paddle -dealing w. What really sells me by now though, after using the Sound-is in contrast to my daughter or friend using my Conduit -I always remain dry as a bone, even after paddling thru whitecaps & heavy winds ! It hardly gains a drop of water, with the deep gunwale that surrounds the cockpit to catch any water even TRYING to enter the kayak! That's especially a nice feature-by Fall -being able to still go kayaking & remain so dry and warm with the bow being the Sit Inside design. paddling this kayak -it's so steady, and paddles nicely-though the Conduit still has the better Glide to it., and feels a little lighter to haul around. scupper holes., that maybe could hold my dog as well, or other gear. I purchased the Sound 9.5 as originally, I preferred the more open cockpit, & also that "original, somewht-Hybrid design" -the open stern piece w. I swore the Conduit was really all anyone ever needed-(as I also own "higher end-larger kayaks). I already own a Perception Conduit 9.5 & Loved it's ltweight, & stable, comfy seat & good glide to it. I had gotten this 9.5 kayak as I knew it would fit Inside my van (& back of my Element., w. If you like to fish - this one is a good one. If I really want to pack a lot (I don't anymore) you can easily fit a milk crate in the rear section - customized to hold tackle, extra rods, lunch, drinks etc. It is a dry ride, PLENTY of storage space etc., and while you can customize the built in holes to better accomodate your fishing rods - I use them as is. The selling feature for me is the light weight, fairly good glide/speed (not going to win a race but I've gone way over 10 miles in mine) and it's tough as nails. I've been in the yak fishing for over 8 hours, and while I'm a bit stiff on getting out for a while - I've been reasonably comfortable. but the biggest difference is using a 'surf to summit' seat with a backrest. I've customized it for me (fishing) - I've added some pad eyes, etc. I'm almost 70 and can easily cartop this yak all over the place. I've owner bigger and faster yaks, but this is my "keeper". This is my 6th or 7th yak and by far my favorite. I have owned the Sound 9.5 for about 5 years now.
